Marija Makeska

Picture
Marija Makeska is one of the rare artists/filmmakers exploring the graciousness and beauty of the Eurasian and Macedonian folk arts, as well as the elegance and dominance of Gothic art. The exploration of Eurasian art started with the question "Who is Medea?" and the answer was too broad and too much information to gather in one simple answer. The answer became a real passion for Caucasian history, mythology, music and folk costumes. It was also an answer with a lot more questions that didn't provide an answer, but a lot of ambiguity to find connections with ancient Balkan mythology and the Bible.

Macedonian folk art, like the Caucasian/Eurasian art, is also rarely displayed in between the average mass. It is unfortunately underrepresented. However, it has the Mediterranean charm and beauty, theatrical Dionysian cultural value and spirituality, and a large complexity in the folk costume patterns. Macedonians are known for their theatre, dances and rhythmic music.

Marija is been previously involved with producing a documentary for the Sephardic Jews in Macedonia called "Soul Mates", and many other works, some of which were displayed in Detroit at film festivals and exhibitions. Her passion, love and spiritual energy is used fully for the arts. Instead of centering herself on one current medium, she tries to combine them. "Art doesn't have a special medium and boundaries. It only needs to have an idea, a goal, and a will."
